What is the Political Courage Test?

North Carolina Congressional Election 2012 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Pro-choice. Roe vs. Wade is settled law and my emphasis is to help the women who want to keep their babies by boader assistance for them while with child, and adoption aid after the birth, or any service that encourages a culture of life, while still protecting the right to choose.
Do you support a timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan?
Unknown Position Do you support United States' combat operations in Afghanistan?
Yes, but feel our efforts should have been primarily based on rooting out terrorists, not nation building. I support a timetable for withdrawal as soon as possible.

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing the federal budget. In order to balance the budget,

Yes do you support reducing defense spending?
Yes do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
No do you support reducing Medicaid spending?
No do you support reducing Medicare spending?
No Is balancing the budget a legislative priority?
My economic priority is to invigorate the economy first and get to fuller employment, then do things to balance the budget. We should not shrink the economy to balance the budget and send the working and middle class into further economic stagnation, while the wealthy continue to prosper due to trade and tax exemptions.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes. Unlimited campaign spending by corporations and unions, as is now allowed by America United, creates a system where the few with the most resources can influence the many with fewer resources, to the advantage of the former and to the demise of the latter.
No Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
No. It is no longer administered on a fair or consistent basis. It is costly and those sentenced now languish for many years before they are executed, if ever. This is unfair to both the contemed, and, more importantly, to the family of the victim. Those sentenced for life in capital murder in the 1st degree cases should have no options for early release: life should mean life.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
Yes Do you support spending on infrastructure projects for the purpose of job creation?
Yes Do you support the temporary extension of unemployment benefits?
No Do you support the 2010 temporary extension of tax relief?
Since the 2010 tax extension is weighed to the higher income brackets, it should end in order to proivide revenue for the government and to help ease the federal deficit. Restoring economic stability should always be a mix of taxing and not taxing, not always one approach for all times.
Unknown Position Do you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants?
Yes. If the federal government invests in education, it should not be a blank check, but one with reasonable guidelines that are constitutional and lawful in federal law, and fair to the states.
No Do you support reducing restrictions on offshore energy production?
We should always have safeguards against offshore energy production to protect the health of our environment. Yet, we must allow for the vital interest our country has in increasing domestic production of energy, so to lessen our dependence on foreign oil.
Yes Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
I believe in background checks to make sure criminals and mentally unbalanced people cannot purchase weapons, but I also believe that our "right to bear arms" is a constitutional mandate and that the vast majority of people should have full Amendment II protection.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
Yes Should individuals be required to purchase health insurance, as mandated in the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
Health care protection is a right, not a privilege, so the cost should be fairly and totally distributed among all the people. Under the ACA, the mechanism for providing affordable and wide-spread coverage includes private health insurance companies, health care providers and hospitals, so it is a mix of government and private entities that ensures both a delivery system.
No Do you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Yes Do you support allowing illegal immigrants, who were brought to the United States as minors, to pursue citizenship without returning to their country of origin?
No Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration law by state and local police?
Illegal immigrants should be returned if they are found in violation of the law pertaining to work, or if they are convicted of serious crimes. It is complex and I would favor a setting clear guidelines for returning illegal immigrants, as well as setting a clear course for attaining citizenship.
Yes Do you support same-sex marriage?
I support same-sex civil marriage, but believe churches should be free to define marriage as their faith allows.
Yes Do you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
Yes Should the U.S use military force in order to prevent Iran from possessing a nuclear weapon?
The U. S. should have the option to use force in any event that threatens our national security, which would be the case with an Iran with nuclear weapons. But the US should use all diplomatic, economic and strategic efforts possible before any all out military effort. And these efforts in full should be in concert with our allies, not unilateral, unless under imminent danger from the belligerent.
No Do you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?

We should greatly increase the tax obligation of corporations that are exempt from any or reduced tax by unfair trade laws (such as outsourcing of labor), or tax shelters or exemptions.
My top priorities if elected to Congress are 1) job creation and economic growth; 2) energy independence and the preservation of our natural resources; and 3) the restoration of integrity and honor to our political system. We need to put our people first over profits and let govenment help prime the economic pump; we must stop being dependent on foreign oil from Middle East countries that don't share our values; and we need a sense of honor in governing by results, not gaining the upper hand on our opposition.
